Urban sustainability in Singapore
Types of waste in Pulau Semakau
It is filled mainly with ash.
Everything except for glass, plastic, electronics, concrete and clothing etc are incinerated at the plants. These recyclable materials are buried in Pulau Semakau instead.

How is waste treated in Pulau Semakau?

Singapore's four incineration plants burn the waste into ash
These incineration plants include: Tuas South incineration plant, Ulu Pandan refuse incineration plant, Senoko incineration plant, Tuas incineration plant.

Ash is shipped to Semakau landfill every night (covered in barge to prevent ash from being blown into the air). Excuvators grabs and unloads ash into the stockpile floor. Wheel loaders scoops up the ash into dump trunks which brings the ash to an active cell where is it subsequently unloaded. Bulldozers and compacters level and compact the solid waste till the cell is filled. Agriculture is then planted on the landscape. This creates a use for the waste by using it as a base for the landscape. The plants grown on the landscape will also benefit the environment.
